For .PSLAB - a Beirut-based but internationally focused lighting company - who are themselves a place of experimentation, we wanted to create a public space at street level within the city, while housing their activity below ground.

This public space is effectively styled after a volcanic caldera, with a variety of interconnected functions and private offices and spaces essentially foresting its slopes. A cloud above this ‘forest’ comprises gardens and public areas. Sometimes rough, at once home to an olive grove and an urban farm, from the rising road the white cloud can barely be seen emerging from between the trees. To the left of the site, and adjacent to the high rise building, we have positioned a boutique hotel suspended over the planted cloud and the forest.

The ground floor is open, and enables temporary and publically accessible activities to occur. The concept and execution allows retail activities to engage with the public – these currently include a florist and artisanal furniture production.
